Ben played all the instruments on his demos for The Lace. When asked why he chose a band when it came time to record the album: “It’s much easier to sit back and watch it be done. I play a lot of instruments, but I don’t play them well. I get through them. The only thing I’m efficient at is drums.” — from “Benjamin Orr: The Cars’ Mr. Casual Steps Out” by Rob Tannenbaum, Musician Magazine, March 1987
He never gave himself credit. His bass playing was phenomenal.

It is surprising that he didn’t say bass and drums, unless he assumed that bass was a given.
There is no way he did not think himself proficient on bass. I mean he was a master creative on that thing.
I am so glad you posted this quote. When people read other things about the making of the Lace it may leave you with the impression that Ben didn’t do anything except sing. And while that is true about the actual recording, knowing that he played each part and mixed the demo, emphasized that the tunes, melodies were his. I love knowing that. More to feel connected to .
Thank you SweetPurpleJune &
Good More Orr Monday morning to you!!

I agree with you — either he was being overly modest or he was referring to the other instruments outside of the bass. Good More Orr Monday to you, too! ❤
