Lyrics: Drive

“Drive” by The Cars

Who’s going to tell you when it’s too late?

Who’s going to tell you things aren’t so great?

You can’t go on thinking nothing’s wrong

Who’s going to drive you home tonight?

Who’s going to pick you up when you fall?

Who’s going to hang it up when you call?

Who’s going to pay attention to your dreams?

Yeah who’s going to plug their ears when you scream?

You can’t go on thinking nothing’s wrong

Who’s going to drive you home tonight?

Who’s going to hold you down when you shake?

Who’s going to come around when you break?

You can’t go on thinking nothing’s wrong

Who’s going to drive you home tonight?

Oh, you know you can’t go on thinking nothing’s wrong

Who’s going to drive you home tonight?

Here’s a lovely acapella version, because who doesn’t want to hear that beautiful voice all on its own?

  1. Have just read tribute to Ric Ocasek by Bebe Buell and in it she says that Ric picks her up in his car after her getting very drunk after a gig and he says to her who’s goin to pick you up when you fall, who’s going to drive you home . So that song wasn’t about a drunk man in a bar as Ric had portrayed it was about his friend Bebe Buell and being concerned about her behaviour as a friend. I was blown away by that tribute. It showed a very caring Ric looking out for a friend. Off course Ric wanted to throw us off track about that as it was very personal feelings about a friend. A great tribute from Bebe Buell .

    1. Yes! I read that, too, and found it very touching. ❤ Interestingly, Luis Aira (who produced Ric's videos and worked with him extensively, and is a very close family friend) wrote a Facebook post in which he related how Ric wrote the story about him. I imagine that the feelings Ric expressed in the song applied to many of his close friends, as we all have our ups and downs from time to time. It's precious!
