Lyrics: “It’s Not The Night”

“It’s Not The Night” by The Cars

It’s not the night for foolin’

It’s not the night for crazy eyes

I get the feeling you wanna stay

I get the feeling you’re giving it all away

But I know, I know you take it well

And for you, for you I always fell

It’s not the night (it’s not the night)

For sweet revenge

It’s not the night (it’s not the night)

To spend

The time is right to take it out

The time is right to tango

I got the feeling you’re running out

Before your last fandango

It’s not the night (it’s not the night)

For sweet, sweet revenge

It’s not the night (it’s not the night)

To spend

It’s not the night for sticky boots

It’s not the night for tango

I get the feeling you’re the spark that’s dancing in the dark

I get the feeling you’re the one rushing on the run

It’s not the night (it’s not the night)

For sweet revenge

It’s not the night (it’s not the night)

To spend

It’s not the night (it’s not the night)

You can find sweet, sweet revenge

It’s not the night (it’s not the night)

To end

It’s not the night

    1. Yeah, I thought it was a weird line, too! I listened to the original song with headphones, and I also slowed down the audio to really try to pick it out, and it sounds right to me. I just checked the lyrics sheet on the expanded edition CD and they didn’t include that part. What the heck? Haha! Oh well… ❤

    2. Could the lyrics be “for sticky booze” not boots? That makes more sense, like with sweet liquor drinks or sweet wines? Just a guess.
‘Boots” just doesn’t make sense to me—nor to I hear a “t” sound when he says the word.

      1. Hmm… that does make sense. But maybe ‘sticky boots’ is like dragging your feet? It’s not the night for dragging your feet/holding back? Good ol’ Ric! He loves to be mysterious. I think we’ll have to settle to hear what we hear and sing what we want to sing. Haha! ❤

  2. OH….I failed to mention Benjamin’s coolness & swagger in this video? OMG my heart skips a beat every time I watch it. He doesn’t even try, it’s just how he was. And the way he grooved? And whipping around his bass at the end? Come on!

    1. Never heard this song (or saw the video), and not one I particularly like, but it was awesome to see a video of delicious Benjamin that was new to me!!

  3. Thanks Donna! I love both the song and the video. When I hear it, I always have a picture in my head with planes at air shows or with Formula 1 racing cars. I am not attached to the meaning of the text and I have only Ben’s voice and music – and this is speed, turns, adrenaline. I always read translations and wonder how resourceful Ric was!

  4. Donna, I don’t know how to use this thing at all and I will repeat my comment, which disappeared somewhere: thanks, Donna! I love this song and this video. When I hear it, I have a picture in my head with planes at air shows or racing cars in Formula 1, because it is speed, turns and adrenaline. I am not attached to the text, but listen to Benjamin’s voice and Ric’s music.

  5. Thanks so much for posting this. I used to turn this song up and sing along with Ben at max volume. Such a gutsy performance by him. And the way he glowers toward the end as he sings the lyrics: he was truly special. Thanks again for a trip down memory lane. 🙂
