A Catalog of The Cars in Soundtracks
One of my little nerdy obsessions…
I’ve been collecting a playlist on Youtube of the appearances of The Cars’ music, name, or influence in our culture. I’ve included television shows, movies, commercials, and cameos by band members. I’ve also added clips where someone else is covering a Cars’ song. This blog page is for my list of clips I’ve gathered.
Some video clips cannot be uploaded due to copyright issues; I’ll make a note next to the entry and let you know if there is another way to view it.
This list will always be a work in progress so if you’re interested in this kind of thing, check back from time to time. I’m working off the IMDB listing as well as following leads people give me (feel free to comment below if you’ve got something for me). I kind of go with what I can get my hands on, how much time I have, and what mood I’m in at the time.
Here’s what I have so far:
(Just a heads up; the Youtube playlist is not in the same order as the list below. One of these days I’ll put Youtube in chronological order, but today is not that day. Haha!)
- 1979 — Over The Edge: “Just What I Needed” ~ “My Best Friend’s Girl”
- 1979 — Promises in the Dark: “My Best Friend’s Girl”
- 1979 — WKRP in Cincinnati, season 1, episode 22: “Just What I Needed” (may not be available in all countries due to copyright)
- 1980 — WKRP in Cincinnati, season 2, episode 15: the Candy-O album cover makes a cameo appearance
- 1980 — WKRP in Cincinnati, season 3, episode 1: “Gimme Some Slack.” Unfortunately I do not have a clip for this. As I understand it, when WKRP first started taping episodes the licensing agreements they had were limited in time. Once the licenses expired, the owners of the episodes chose to substitute similar but generic music rather than pay to renew, even though it meant sometimes re-dubbing dialogue. I can’t find a version of this episode that still has the original soundtrack.
- 1980 — Times Square: “Dangerous Type”
- 1981 — WKRP in Cincinnati, season 4, episode 9: the Shake It Up cover makes a cameo appearance
- 1982 — Last American Virgin: “Shake It Up” ~ “Since You’re Gone”
- 1982 — Fast Times at Ridgemont High: “Moving In Stereo”
- 1982 — Smithereens: the Panorama album cover is seen on the wall
- 1983 — Doing It: “Shake It Up” (this is listed as pornography on IMDB so I don’t intend to search it out)

- 1984 — Saturday Night Live: performed “Magic” and “Drive” (uploaded on Facebook)
- 1984 — Saturday Night Live: Elliot Easton appeared with Peter Wolf, performing “I Need You Tonight” and “Lights Out” (uploaded on Facebook)
- 1985 — The Sure Thing: “You Might Think”
- 1985 — Live Aid: “You Might Think,” “Drive,” “Just What I Needed,” “Heartbeat City” (unable to upload this to my own channel, but I did create a playlist piecing together videos that involved The Cars)
- 1985 — The Fall Guy, season 4, episode 20: “Hello Again” (flagged on YouTube as ‘inappropriate content,’ which is so weird since it is a scene from a show that aired on television!)
- 1986 — Top Gun: “Stranger Eyes” (trailer)
- 1986 — Saturday Night Live: Ric Ocasek performed “Emotion in Motion” and “Keep on Laughing” (uploaded on Facebook) (solo performance). Ric also appears in a “Church Chat” skit with Dana Carvey, Victoria Jackson, and Rosanna Arquette.

- 1990 — Pretty Woman: “Real Wild Child” (Christopher Otcasek (Ric’s son))
